New surroundings for VIA’s design programmes in Sydhavnen

VIA University College’s design programmes in Aarhus have moved into new premises in Sydhavnen, where teaching and workshop activities are now gathered under one roof. Throughout the project, emphasis has been placed on making responsible choices and giving existing materials and interior elements a new life. Today, the building forms the setting for an everyday learning environment where ideas, materials and production are closely connected.

The interior is shaped around functional learning environments, with space for both focused work and collaboration. Across the floors, work zones, workshop areas and smaller seating areas have been created to support the different ways in which the students work.

Custom-designed elements and reuse

Part of the furniture was developed specifically for the project. The custom-designed stools were created by Holmris B8 for this particular setting and adapted to the teaching environment. They are placed along workstations and walls throughout the space, contributing to a simple and functional overall expression.

At the same time, the interior features several pieces from Holmris B8’s Recrafted range, such as A-table, Tres and New Aarch, where existing materials have been brought into new contexts. The tables vary in expression and bring subtle variation to the spaces. The materials have been kept simple and robust, making them well suited to daily use in the workshops. Together with the natural light and open spaces, this creates an environment that feels calm, yet constantly in use.

The project was developed for VIA University College with Karen Toft as architect. Holmris B8 supplied the furniture and contributed to the interior design process through dialogue and input. With an ambition to make responsible choices, the project focused on bringing existing materials, reused elements and new furniture together.
