Giving new life to historic buildings
The American magazine TIME¹ has named SMK Thy, located in northwestern Jutland, Denmark, one of the world’s greatest destinations. SMK is the National Gallery of Denmark.
Here, the iconic grain silo and the old warehouse in Doverodde have undergone an impressive transformation and now form the setting for the museum overlooking the Limfjord. The acclaimed Norwegian-Danish architectural firm Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter led the redevelopment of the site.
Within the existing buildings, a modern museum experience has been created while meeting the requirements for climate control, specialized lighting, and protective installations. Materials such as bricks from the former warehouse were cleaned and reused, creating a beautiful connection between the old and the new.
Holmris B8 supplied loose furniture for the site’s many spaces – from the warehouse, the restaurant Centralen, and the main hall to the administration offices, retreat, community house, workshop, and welcome center. The scope also included furniture for the outdoor areas.
As part of the project, Holmris B8 also produced and installed frames for the artwork displayed in Centralen and the administration offices.
The furniture was selected in calm, understated tones that complement the surrounding landscape, the architecture, and the art. The result is a cohesive interior that connects the many buildings and functions and supports the experience of SMK Thy, Nature Village, and Centralen as one unified destination.
