Sea Circle, Kalvebod Brygge Copenhagen

A room at sea that fosters creativity

Located on Kalvebod Brygge in Copenhagen, Castellum’s Sea Circle is a floating venue for business-related events such as conferences, meetings, dinners, and receptions that call for something out of the ordinary.

The boat has not always been an event venue. When Castellum acquired it, it had previously been used as a showroom. Since then, the houseboat has undergone a full renovation and refurbishment from top to bottom. The interior was carried out by Holmris B8 in close collaboration with Mette Gravergaard and Tina Fischer of SWECO Architects. The style is simple and built around high-quality materials in a timeless color palette. As you move through the boat, playful details appear that subtly reference the sea – such as ceramic vases shaped like large corals and salt and pepper shakers resembling small blue mussels.

Holmris B8 supplied all loose furniture, curtains, and custom pieces for the first floor – the heart of the boat, centered around the large circular skylight.

Sea Circle offers something special – and research supports it

The venue was created with the ambition of offering an alternative setting for people to meet. In fact, the design of the space reflects the qualities associated with what research calls creative press: the interaction between people and their physical surroundings, and how environments can either support or inhibit creativity.

Visual stimulation, daylight, windows, and rounded, organic shapes have a documented impact on creative thinking and idea development.

Studies show that factors such as visual stimulation, daylight, windows, and rounded or organic shapes have a documented impact on creative thinking and idea development. Access to daylight and views of nature supports individual creative performance, while the perception of spatial volume and ceiling height is linked to the ability to generate new ideas.

The boat’s large windows and skylight flood the interior with daylight and create a strong visual connection to the sky and harbor outside. The round table on the first floor, the character of the space, and the view as a shared point of reference create a setting where conversations gain energy and perspective.

Sea Circle is therefore more than just a spectacular location. It is a tangible example of how physical design can function as creative infrastructure – where the surroundings actively contribute to the meetings, conversations, and ideas that emerge on board. The images below offer a glimpse of the distinctive setting.
